What we collect, why, and your rights over it.

British Intelligent Governance is a research and advisory project. The website is built to be read without being watched: it sets no advertising or analytics cookies, runs no third-party trackers, and builds no profile of you. This notice explains the personal data we do handle, and is written to meet the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018.

Who is responsible for your data

What we collect, and the lawful basis

We collect only what a specific interaction needs.

• When you use the contact or enquiry form — your name, email address, organisation and message. Lawful basis: our legitimate interest in answering enquiries about the project (and, where your message is about a possible engagement, taking steps toward a contract).
• When you sign up for updates — your name and email address, a postcode and a note on what draws you in if you choose to give them, and the date and time you consented. We use double opt-in: nothing joins the list until you click the confirmation link we email you, and if you never click it, nothing more is sent. Lawful basis: consent, which you can withdraw at any time using the unsubscribe link carried in every email we send.
• When you make a contribution — the payment is handled by Stripe on its own checkout; we receive a confirmation and the amount, not your card details. Lawful basis: performing the donation you asked for, and our legitimate interest in keeping proper financial records.
• When you use "Ask the Charter" — the question you submit is sent to the reasoning service to produce an answer. Do not enter personal or confidential information into it. Lawful basis: legitimate interest in operating the service you have chosen to use.

How long we keep it

• Enquiry and contact messages: kept while we deal with your enquiry and for up to 24 months afterwards, then deleted.
• Sign-up details: kept until you unsubscribe or ask us to remove them. When you unsubscribe we stop sending immediately and keep only a minimal record of your address, so we know never to email it again; write to us if you would like even that removed.
• Donation records: kept for six years, as required by UK tax and company law.
• Server logs (see below): kept for the short period set by our hosting provider.

Who processes data on our behalf

We use a small number of established providers, each under a data-processing agreement:

• Cloudflare — hosting, security and the Turnstile anti-spam check, and the database (Cloudflare D1, on Cloudflare's infrastructure) that holds the sign-up list. Keeps standard, short-lived server logs (such as IP address and request time) to deliver the site securely.
• Resend — sends the emails generated by the contact and sign-up forms.
• Stripe — processes contributions on its own secure checkout under its own privacy policy.
• Anthropic — provides the language model behind "Ask the Charter", processing the question you submit to generate an answer.

International transfers

Some of these providers process data outside the UK. Where they do, the transfer is covered by the UK's International Data Transfer Agreement or an equivalent safeguard, so your data keeps essentially the same protection it has here.

Cookies

We set no advertising or analytics cookies and show no consent banner because there is nothing non-essential to consent to. The only client-side storage is a functional token that Cloudflare Turnstile may set to tell a real visitor from a bot when you submit a form. The full detail is in our Cookie Policy.

Your rights

Under UK GDPR you have the right to access the data we hold about you, to have it corrected or deleted, to restrict or object to how we use it, and to data portability. Where we rely on consent, you can withdraw it at any time. To exercise any of these, write to privacy@britishintelligentgovernance.com and we will respond within one month.

If you are not satisfied with how we have handled your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk or on 0303 123 1113.
